Apart from being known as the city of Batik, Cirebon is also famous for rattan crafts. As one of the regions in Cirebon, Tegalwangi is the center of this rattan handicrafts.The business of rattan handicrafts has been part of the economic and cultural development of both Tegalwangi and Cirebon since the 80s. The development of Tegalwangi is marked by the emergence of rattan craftsmen activity centers, which can be found practically everywhere. The scale of the industry itself is quite diverse, ranging from home industries that usually consist of 15-30 workers, to large-scale industries that can accommodate up to 1000 workers.

The rattan commodity has become one of the pillars of Cirebon’s economy. According to the Cirebon Industry and Trade Service, the export value of rattan furniture throughout 2023 amounted to 127.48 million USD and rattan woven goods were at 27.66 million USD. Throughout 2023, Cirebon has exported 22,025 tons of furniture to countries in Europe, East Asia, and the Middle East.

Currently, the government of Cirebon is working intensively to develop new markets for the rattan industry and restore it to its glory days in the early 2000s. One of the ideas is to establish rattan tourism. The primary objective is to educate tourists who come to learn more about rattan handicraft products while boosting the economy of the region.
